Government to host international summit on new nuclear energy
SWEDEN, September 25 - Published
On 7 October 2025, Sweden’s Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch and several ministerial colleagues will host a high-level summit on new nuclear energy in the Baltic Sea region. Finland’s Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will co-host the event.
Interest in new nuclear energy is strong in many countries, especially in Sweden’s neighbourhood around the Baltic Sea. Countries such as Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Poland have taken concerted steps towards expanding new nuclear energy.
The International Energy Agency has indicated that there is global momentum for nuclear energy and that interest is at its greatest since the 1970s oil crisis of the 1970s. At a side event at the UN COP28 Climate Change Conference, more than 20 countries endorsed a declaration to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050. Today, more than 30 countries back the declaration. Several factors are driving this development, including the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and ensure a stable energy supply.
In light of this development, the Government is now inviting ministers from neighbouring countries, international owners of nuclear energy, industry representatives, suppliers and potential investors to the Nordic-Baltic Nuclear Investment Summit in Stockholm.
Several participating ministers from Sweden and Finland are behind the invitation: Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch, Minister for Finance Elisabeth Svantesson, Minister for Financial Markets Niklas Wykman, Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari and Finland’s Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.
The Summit is being prepared in cooperation with Sweden’s National Nuclear New-build Coordinator Carl Berglöf.
